Looking for a tonal shift from the previous artist research, I’m taking a look at the work of Iceland based Laura Cogan, whose Instagram account @hassywonderland, features a mixture of colour and black and white stills of the Icelandic countryside, mountains, and geographical features are all taken on, as the account handle suggests, a Hasselblad medium format camera. What interests me about their work is the contrast between harsh, bold mountainscapes dusted with snow, with impressive jagged forms bursting from the landscape, and the warm, colourful shots of summer meadows decorated with wildflowers that are inviting and welcoming. The shots themselves are very crisp and clean with the advantages brought to the table via medium format and a strong equipment base in the tried and tested Hasselblad platform bringing a wonderful richness to the images, serving almost as windows into the wilds of Iceland. That ability to create inviting and open images that allow the viewer to place themselves within a landscape of the photographers choosing and perhaps ponder the experiences that might be found there is certainly one that has applications within my own project.
