Project Proposal: Printmaking & Liminal Infrastructure

Writer's picture: Angus, The PhotographerAngus, The Photographer

Project Proposal:

Developing printmaking skills to produce a body of work from my ‘Liminal Infrastructure’ series of photography.

Summary:

Having started my journey into photography through digital means, analogue photographic practices were not something I had used, let alone studied and applied. With the last set of modules on the course, I began to experiment and develop my usage of analogue photo practices, starting with shooting and developing my own 35mm’s then moving on to medium format photography, an insightful session into large format shooting and some experimentation into alternative process' like cyanotype. Having continued to use analogue equipment and processes for the majority of my work now, I have built up a reasonable number of frames that I would now like to explore and produce some high-quality darkroom prints, and limited-run series of shots both from my catalogue of shots and a large portion from my most recent liminal infrastructure shoots that I have been undertaking around town and the surrounding area during lockdown (pending successful development!).

Plan:

Having had no access to the facilities required to begin work on this project for a considerable amount of the module, I used the time in lockdown to instead shoot some film with my liminal infrastructure theme as a starting point so that, once access was possible, I would hopefully have a reasonable stock of images to work with in the darkroom.

With a couple of dates set in where I will have access to the facilities on campus, I will first develop my shot film, then as they are drying I will begin to practice making some small 5x4 prints with some of my existing shots from earlier in the year. Once comfortable with the processes involved I plan to move up to doing 10x8 prints in series, with an artist’s proof in each. If I am able to acquire some larger, fibre-based photo paper (say 20x16) then I would like to produce a few, larger prints that would be good pieces for exhibition or display.

After this, I would like to look into getting what I can of these prints framed up or to a ‘finished’ level of production. With an aim to perhaps sell some of the smaller series prints and A/P’s and hold onto the larger works as pieces to enter into competitions or exhibitions.

Scale/Scope:

I would hope to produce around 8-10 of the 5x4’s, around 12-16 10x8 prints in series of ~4 with one being an artist’s proof, and if able, I would like to produce 3-5 of the large prints, with at least 1 being framed and ‘finished’ by the end of this project. If I can find a more cost-effective way to frame more of my prints then I hope to frame even more of the produced prints! However, I suspect that printmaking will very likely continue into my major project.
